House Hunting

Pictured above is my absolute ideal home: an old New England house full of turrets and balconies on plenty of land leading to the water.  Unfortunately, this house does not exist- at least not as pictured above!  The home used in the 1998 movie Practical Magic was just a shell built for production out on San Juan Island, Washington.  Sigh.

Will and I are beginning to look at houses in the area.  We are not quite ready to buy (gotta get through the wedding first!) but are starting to see what is out there: what we like, don't like, agree on, disagree on.  We have a few ideas but it's all a bit overwhelming.  Will jokes that the only way we'll be able to agree on a house is if we build one that looks old, since he likes newer conveniences and I like the character of old homes.  Good thing we're starting early!

Do you own a home?  If so, do you like it?  Would you change anything about it?  How about your neighborhood?  Were schools an important factor?  I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

Documentaries Worth Watching

Do you watch documentaries?  Since we recently signed up for Netflix (after cancelling for a while) I've been addicted to finding new documentaries and Indie films to watch.  Monday night, Will and I watched Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion.  It was more of a stand up special than a documentary, but the comedy was peppered with snippets of interviews.  It was a lot of fun, and I would totally recommend it.  I also recently watched Jig, about Irish step dancers, and Bill Cunningham New York, about the upbeat (and famous) fashion photographer for The New York Times. I am very much looking forward to watching Sarah Polley's new documentary, Stories We Tell, about her family dealing with her mother's infidelity.

Do you have any documentary suggestions?

High Tea

For my bridal shower, my sister has come up with the lovely idea of having a Downton Abbey themed high tea!  This tickles me beyond words, since my love for Downton (and all things British) runs very deep.

Lindsey and I are avid podcast listeners, and she recently turned me on to Rick Steve's travel podcast (not to mention Up Yours, Downstairs, which is a hilarious Downton recap podcast).  On January 19, Rick did a podcast featuring English high tea- you can listen to the podcast here.  The podcast features what to expect at high tea versus regular tea time in Britain, as well as high tea etiquette and some excellent recommendations for where to take in a proper (and elegant) high tea.

Okay, I admit it- I envision myself as Lady Mary at least once a day.  I mean, look at that dress!

Here are a few places in the U.S. that serve up high tea: would you want to go?

~ The Hilton at Easton, Columbus, OH (yes please!)

~ The Ritz-Carlton, New York, NY

~ High Tea Cottage, Woodland Hills, CA

It's The Weekend!

What are you doing this weekend?  Right now we are hoping the rain will hold off so that we can celebrate Will's birthday with a pool party and then go see my sister's show, King Arthur and the Sword of Britain.  Hope your weekend is beautiful!  Here are some interesting links, if you'd like to see:

~ Open Door Art Studio has a beautiful mission of empowering artists with disabilities, and they are always having fun and thought provoking exhibits.

~ Patty Griffin's new music video features a pretty little paper crow:)

~ A lovely maxi bridesmaid dress...
